The Environmental Soil Management Companies, a member of the D.A. Collins family, are the proven leader in contaminated soil remediation and recycling. With the largest treatment facilities for contaminated soils in the Northeast, the ESMI Companies have the capability to treat soils contaminated with oils, solvents, PCBs, coal tars, fuels and other constituents at our facilities located in Fort Edward, New York and Loudon, New Hampshire.
For over 15 years the ESMI Companies have successfully completed more than 10,000 soil remediation projects that have resulted in the treatment and recycling of more than 3 million tons of contaminated soil. The Company is permitted to treat up to 425,000 tons of contaminated soils per year, at the New York and New Hampshire facilities.
For larger environmental remediation projects, ESMI owns a high-capacity portable treatment plant capable of treating soils at the project site — eliminating transportation costs, associated transportation liability and providing treated soils for on-site re-use.
ESMI utilizes a treatment process called thermal desorption — a proven technology that permanently destroys hydrocarbons and other organic contaminates. ESMI’s treatment process achieves greater than 99% destruction efficiency, ensuring that the contaminated media has been successfully remediated to a level typically below detection limits. To achieve this, the contaminated materials are heated in a rotary dryer to temperatures between 350 -1,000 F depending on the type of contaminate. The desorbed contaminants enter the secondary treatment phase where they are heated to above 1500 F. The exiting gas stream is then cooled in an evaporative cooling chamber prior to entering a baghouse where any particulates are removed, prior to exiting the treatment process.
Soils treated by ESMI are either returned to the customer for re-use or recycled into a variety of construction materials for commercial or industrial fill applications. Thermal desorption does not damage the soil’s characteristics, which enables the treated soil to support future biological activity.
